Marbella and Prince Alfonso Hohenlohe
Until the 1940s, Marbella was nothing more than a village of 900 inhabitants on the Spanish coast. All that changed when, according to legend, a German prince, charcoal-powered Rolls-Royce, then broke. Prince Alfonso Hohenlohe love with the place and decided to stay.
Born in one of the oldest noble families in Europe (he was a godson of the King of Spain), Hohenlohe was running a successful business man and notorious playboy,five languages and skilled in sports like tennis and rallying. After his fateful stop in Marbella, he decided in 1947 to a large private house building – the Finca Santa Margarita, with the traditional white walls, red tile roofs, charming and beautiful patios and terraces, a large garden with fountains, trees and thousands of well-tended lawn. There he played host to a steady stream of visitors with glamorous names like Bismarck, Metternich and Thyssen, many of whomFinally, the adjacent land purchased to build their own houses.
But Hohenlohe had even bigger plans. In 1954 he sold his own house (and his friends used the Rothschilds) and in other parts of the estate, to build the famous Marbella Club, which quickly became synonymous with the mid-century Europe's elite "jet set" lifestyle .
